About the role

The Engineer will work as part of a team developing software and hardware applications that support the needs of Draeger manufacturing at Blyth. These will include in-house developer solutions for automated assembly, functional test and production monitoring. The Engineer will develop expert knowledge of the company’s products and systems to best support these developments.

To design, realise, document, and maintain robust, user friendly, software and hardware solutions that provide the required functionality and performance levels to support Draeger manufacturing processes.

Description of duties

  • Liaise with project, manufacturing, test equipment, in-service personnel and other stakeholders to capture requirements.
  • Generation of software and hardware requirements and specifications.
  • Develop schedules and costs for test systems solutions.
  • Design instrumentation implementations and generate LabVIEW software code in accordance with own or other engineers’ schedule requirements, utilizing standard revision control and review procedures.
  • Propose and implement new/best practice production development techniques.
  • Contribute to creation of future strategic targets.
  • Assist with the training and guidance of apprentices, operators and others where appropriate.
  • Undertake training and development activities where appropriate.
  • Occasional travel off-site to conduct inspection of new equipment, attend training courses and provide support to remote sites.
  • Project manage production test solutions throughout their full life cycle, from conception to integration into the Production environment, and upgrade legacy systems as required.
  • Create Technical files for projects containing hardware/software information, spares, maintenance requirements etc.

Your Qualifications

 Role Requirements

Education/Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree level qualification or relevant experience to a similar level in Engineering, Electronics or Physics subjects.

Related Experience 

Essential:

  • Design, develop, and implement control systems, including PLC, and HMI programming.
  • Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and system layouts using CAD software.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to control systems.
  • Perform system testing, validation, and commissioning of equipment.
  • Proficiency in PLC and HMI programming (e.g. Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron).
  • Familiarity with industrial automation systems and protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).

Desirable:

  • Project management experience.
  • Experience as Technical Lead.
  • Experience of or with:
  • An industrial work environment.
  • Lean Manufacturing techniques.
  • LabVIEW Real-Time and LabVIEW FPGA.
  • Pneumatic systems and integration.
  • Experience with robotics and motion control systems.
  • Skills, Special Competencies

Essential:

  • Willingness to learn LabVIEW to interface with 3rd party hardware, integrate with existing systems, acquire, and analyse data, database interaction and user interface design.
  • Working knowledge:
  • A range of automation hardware.
  • Electronics and instrumentation.
  • Self-organisation, motivation, and efficient time management.

Desirable:

  • Experienced in developing test software for automatic execution.
  • Proven track record of producing solutions on time and within budget.
  • Experience with
  • Other programming languages.
  • SQL database implementation.
  • LabVIEW programming to CLD level or higher.
